Staging Tips to Help Sell Your Home

If you are putting your home on the market, staging it first can impact the number and size of offers that you receive. A survey by the National Association of Realtors found that staging a home can increase buyers’ offers by up to 10%. Additionally, in the same survey, 31% of real estate agents said that staging a home reduces the length of time it sits on the market[1].

The most popular rooms to stage are living rooms, kitchens, master bedrooms, dining rooms, and home offices[2]. The cost to stage your home varies widely depending on the scope of the staging, ranging from a few hundred dollars to thousands of dollars. If you are interested in staging your home, following are some tips for success:

  • Declutter: Go through the house and evaluate each item in each room to decide if you should keep, toss, or donate it. The more items you can remove, the better. Less clutter will make your home feel larger, brighter, and airier.
  • Depersonalize: Potential homebuyers want to picture themselves in your home. For this reason, it’s important to remove all personal pictures. If you are taking down photos hanging on the walls, either consider painting the walls or replace the personalized pictures with cute pictures from discount home décor stores. Also remove any religious decorations from the house as well.
  • Deep Clean: If you can afford it, hire a professional cleaning crew to deep clean your home from top to bottom after you have decluttered and depersonalized it. If a cleaning crew is out of your budget, then roll up your sleeves and scrub every nook and cranny so that your home looks and smells immaculate.
  • Update Décor: Budget permitting, paint the inside of your home using trendy neutral colors so that it will appear peaceful, attractive, and likely to match with potential homebuyers’ furniture. Refresh any dated window coverings with inexpensive new ones, and update throw pillows and bedding to match the current trends. If your furniture is dated, move it into storage and replace it with rental furniture. If you are not sure how to best update your décor, ask your real estate agent to refer you to a professional home stager for advice.
